What Are Physical Therapy Modalities?

Depending on the patient's needs, these may include therapeutic laser therapy, photobiomodulation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, blood flow restriction training, compression therapy, and soft tissue techniques.

The important thing to understand is that modalities are generally used as part of a larger treatment plan. They are not intended to replace therapeutic exercise, movement training, strength development, or patient education.

Class IV Laser and Photobiomodulation

Laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to deliver energy to targeted tissues.

Research has investigated photobiomodulation for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including joint pain, sports injuries, and other orthopedic conditions. Recent systematic reviews suggest that photobiomodulation may help reduce pain in certain populations, although the quality and consistency of evidence varies depending on the condition and treatment parameters.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Compression Therapy

Research suggests it may provide benefits for perceived muscle soreness and certain recovery outcomes, although evidence is mixed and does not establish compression therapy as superior to every other recovery strategy.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
