What is Bursitis (around the ankle)?

Ankle bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that provides cushioning and reduces friction between bones and soft tissues. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility in the ankle. Ankle bursitis commonly affects the bursae located near the Achilles tendon, the back of the heel, or the inner side of the ankle. The inflammation can be due to overuse, injury, or underlying conditions, leading to discomfort and difficulty in walking or performing activities. Causes of ankle bursitis include repetitive motion activities that involve repetitive ankle movements, such as running or jumping, direct trauma to the ankle, such as a blow or fall, footwear that places excessive pressure on the ankle or heel, and medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Symptoms to look out for include pain in the ankle, often worsening with activity or pressure, swelling around the affected area, redness and warmth at the site of the bursitis, and stiffness in the ankle, especially after periods of inactivity.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination to assess pain, swelling, and range of motion, a review of medical history and recent injuries or activities, and imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI to rule out other conditions and confirm the diagnosis. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation and relieve pain, which may include rest and immobilization, ice therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and aspiration in some cases.

Physical Therapy for Bursitis (around the ankle)

Physical therapy is an effective way to manage ankle bursitis and promote recovery. Physical therapy for ankle bursitis may include range of motion exercises to maintain or improve ankle mobility, strengthening exercises to build strength in the muscles around the ankle, manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue massage and joint mobilizations, ultrasound therapy, and education on activity modification and proper footwear to prevent recurrence. Ankle bursitis can be a painful and limiting condition, but with appropriate care, including physical therapy, many individuals can achieve relief and return to their normal activities. If you're experiencing symptoms of ankle bursitis, consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan. Adhering to a comprehensive rehabilitation program and making necessary lifestyle adjustments can help you recover effectively and prevent future episodes of bursitis.
