What is Thoracic Kyphosis?

Thoracic kyphosis is a postural condition characterized by an excessive outward curvature of the thoracic spine, leading to a rounded or hunched upper back. The thoracic spine naturally has a gentle curvature, but when this curve becomes exaggerated, it can result in thoracic kyphosis. This condition may be caused by factors such as poor posture, muscle imbalances, structural abnormalities, or degenerative changes in the spine. As a result, individuals with thoracic kyphosis may experience stiffness, discomfort, and a visible rounding of the upper back. Severe cases can impact spinal alignment, potentially leading to complications like reduced lung capacity and back pain.

Physical Therapy for Thoracic Kyphosis

Physical therapy is an effective and non-invasive approach to address thoracic kyphosis. A skilled physical therapist can design a tailored exercise program to improve posture, increase flexibility, and strengthen the muscles supporting the spine. Stretching exercises are employed to lengthen tight muscles in the chest and anterior shoulder region, helping to counteract the forward curvature of the thoracic spine. Strengthening exercises, particularly targeting the muscles in the upper back and core, play a crucial role in providing stability and support to the spine.
