What is Subacromial Impingement?

Subacromial impingement is a shoulder condition marked by the compression of structures, particularly the rotator cuff tendons, beneath the acromion. This compression causes pain, inflammation, and limited shoulder mobility. It often results from anatomical variations, repetitive overhead movements, or muscle imbalances. Physical therapy is a primary treatment, addressing muscle strength, flexibility, and biomechanics. Conservative measures such as anti-inflammatory medications are employed, and corticosteroid injections may be considered for pain management. Severe cases might require surgical intervention to create more space in the subacromial area.

Physical Therapy for Subacromial Impingement

Physical therapists design interventions to improve muscle strength, flexibility, and biomechanics, reducing the impingement. Targeted exercises aim to enhance shoulder stability and correct movement patterns, alleviating pain and inflammation. Additionally, therapists educate individuals on proper posture, ergonomics, and exercises for ongoing self-management. Physical therapy offers a conservative, non-invasive approach to manage subacromial impingement, promoting optimal shoulder function and preventing further complications.
