Meniscus tears can be categorized based on their location, pattern, and severity. Common types include:

Radial Tear: Extends from the inner edge to the outer edge of the meniscus, often disrupting the normal function of the meniscus.

Bucket Handle Tear: A vertical tear that lifts a portion of the meniscus, causing it to resemble a bucket handle. This type may lead to mechanical symptoms like joint locking.

Flap Tear. A partial-thickness tear where a portion of the meniscus is torn but remains partially attached.

Complex Tear: Involves a combination of radial, horizontal, and/or other tear patterns.

Physical Therapy for different types of Meniscus Tears

The approach to physical therapy for meniscus tears is tailored to factors like tear type, location, and associated injuries. Generally, the focus is on pain and swelling reduction using methods like ice and compression. Restoring normal knee movement is achieved through gentle exercises and stretches, while targeted exercises strengthen key muscle groups such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles for enhanced knee support. Joint stability is improved through balance and proprioceptive exercises, and functional training incorporates activities mirroring daily tasks or sports. A structured program facilitates a gradual return to normal activities, considering the tear's type and severity. In cases requiring surgical intervention like arthroscopic meniscus repair or partial meniscectomy, post-surgery physical therapy is vital to optimize recovery, restore strength and function, and prevent complications, with an individualized approach based on the specific tear, surgical procedure, and overall patient condition.
