What is Lumbar Fusion?

A lumbar fusion is a surgical procedure performed to permanently join two or more vertebrae in the lumbar (lower) spine. The goal of this surgery is to stabilize the spine, reduce pain, and help restore the spacing between the vertebral bodies creating more space for spinal nerves to pass through. The surgical procedure is commonly used to treat conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis (slippage of one vertebra over another), spinal stenosis, or certain types of fractures.

Physical Therapy for Lumbar Fusion

Physical therapy is an essential component of the rehabilitation process after lumbar fusion surgery. Its primary goals are to promote healing, improve mobility, strengthen the surrounding muscles, and enhance overall function. Therapists use various techniques, including modalities such as ice or heat therapy, to help manage postoperative pain and reduce inflammation.Gentle exercises help improve flexibility and restore normal range of motion in the spine. Strengthening core exercises are incorporated to provide support for the spine and prevent excessive stress on the fused segments. Consistent adherence to the exercises is important for long-term recovery.
