What is a Lumbar Disc Bulge?

A lumbar disc bulge is a condition that occurs when the outer layer of an intervertebral disc in the lumbar spine (lower back) weakens or degenerates, causing the disc to extend beyond its normal boundaries. A bulging disc in the lower back can cause pain in the hips, legs, buttocks, and feet. May also lead to sciatica, which can cause debilitating pain and make it difficult to complete everyday tasks.

Physical Therapy for Lumbar Disc Bulge

The majority of lumbar disc bulges can be managed conservatively. Treatment options may include rest, pain medication, physical therapy, exercises to strengthen the core muscles, and lifestyle modifications. In severe cases or when conservative measures fail, surgical intervention may be considered. Targeted exercises are prescribed to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, particularly the core muscles. Stretching and mobility exercises can help reduce stiffness and tightness around the lower back region, promoting relief from the pressure on the discs.
