What is Hallux Valgus (Bunions)?

Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a deformity characterized by a lateral deviation of the big toe, causing it to angle towards the other toes. This condition often results in a bony prominence on the inside of the foot at the base of the big toe, which can be painful and inflamed. Bunions can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, improper footwear, and foot structure abnormalities.

Physical Therapy for Hallux Valgus (Bunions)

Treatment for hallux valgus bunions depends on the severity of the condition. Conservative measures such as wearing wide, comfortable shoes and using orthotic devices to support the foot and reduce pressure on the bunion may help alleviate symptoms. Physical therapy is also a valuable treatment option for bunions, focusing on strengthening the muscles around the big toe, improving joint mobility, and correcting foot mechanics through exercises and manual therapy techniques. These interventions can help reduce pain, improve function, and prevent further progression of the deformity.

In cases where conservative treatments are ineffective, surgical intervention may be necessary to realign the toe joint and remove the bony prominence. Physical therapy is often an essential part of the post-operative rehabilitation process, helping patients regain strength, range of motion, and function in the affected foot. By addressing the underlying biomechanical issues contributing to bunions, physical therapy can play a crucial role in both the conservative management and post-operative care of hallux valgus bunions, helping individuals find relief from pain and improve their quality of life.
