What is Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain is a common injury that occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn. This often results from a sudden twist or roll of the foot, leading to pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected ankle. While mild sprains may heal with rest and home care, more severe sprains often require professional intervention to ensure proper healing and prevent chronic instability.

Physical Therapy for Ankle Sprain

Physical therapy is a crucial component of the recovery process for ankle sprains. The primary goals of physical therapy are to reduce pain and swelling, restore ankle range of motion, improve strength and stability, and facilitate a safe return to daily activities and sports. Initially, treatment may involve rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to manage inflammation, along with gentle range-of-motion exercises to maintain mobility.

As the ankle heals, the focus shifts to strengthening exercises for the muscles around the ankle, particularly the peroneals, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius-soleus complex. Balance and proprioception exercises are also incorporated to enhance ankle stability and reduce the risk of re-injury. Gradually, functional training is introduced to ensure a confident return to pre-injury activities. Throughout the rehabilitation process, a physical therapist will provide guidance on appropriate exercises, monitor progress, and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure optimal recovery.
